California Gov. Jerry Brown on Wednesday issue an executive order calling on the state to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030. Via the Associated Press, California is already on track to reduce carbon emissions to 1990 levels by the end of this decade through a cap-and-trade program implemented nearly three years ago.
Brown offered few specifics on how the new target would be achieved, but state officials said renewable energy and alternative fuels would be integral. Brown’s target is more ambitious than President Obama’s recently announced goal to cut carbon emissions in the U.S. by as much as 28% by 2025.
