Calpine has agreed to sell six power plants located throughout the southeastern U.S. to LS Power for $1.57 billion. The plants being sold comprise 3,498 megawatts of combined-cycle generation capacity in Oklahoma, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida and South Carolina. The sale is part of Calpine’s effort to focus on wholesale power markets in the Western U.S., Texas and the Mid-Atlantic region. The firm in February purchased a 1,050-megawatt natural gas combined cycle plant near San Antonio, Texas, for $625 million. The announced sale would leave Calpine with four natural gas-fired plants in the Southeast, all of which the company will likely try to sell.
