A CSX train carrying crude oil derailed this afternoon in Fayette County, W.Va., the Associated Press reports. Several cars caught fire as a result of the accident. West Virginia authorities said the tanker is leaking oil into the river. No injuries have been reported at this time.
The incident comes two days after a Canadian National Railway Co. train carrying crude oil derailed in Ontario, sparking fires and spilling some oil. Via Bloomberg, 29 out of the 100 cars in the train were involved in the accident Saturday and seven caught fire. Canadian National shut down its main line linking western and eastern Canada. The accident could impede shipments of crude to refineries in eastern Canada.
The accidents are the latest in a string of crude-oil-carrying train derailments that have compelled authorities in the U.S and Canada to consider more stringent safety and tank car construction regulations.
