A heavy crude unit at Motiva Enterprises’ Convent, Louisiana, refinery that was damaged in a fire on Thursday was surrounded by high water from heavy rain on Friday. Via Reuters, sources said the effort to limit environmental damage while fighting the fire contributed to the flooding around the unit. The flooding was not expected to affect any other units at the refinery.
The fire, which burned for approximately four hours, prompted a plantwide evacuation, but there were no injuries.
Shell and Saudi Aramco in March agreed to break up their 18-year Motiva joint venture, with Shell retaining ownership of the Convent refinery and another refinery in Norco, Louisiana. Saudi Aramco will retain the Motiva refinery in Port Arthur, Texas.
The Convent refinery is planning an FCCU overhaul in October.
