Energy-related carbon dioxide emissions have fallen in 48 states since 2005, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA). The EIA’s data show the 10 states with the highest levels of energy-related CO2 emissions accounted for half of the U.S. total. Texas was the highest emitter, followed by California and Pennsylvania. Louisiana was the eighth-highest CO2-emitting state.
Earlier this year President Obama unveiled his Clean Power Plan, which aims to cut emissions by 32% of 2005 levels by 2030. Opponents of the plan say it will cost the U.S. economy billions of dollars and thousands of jobs without providing any environmental benefit.
