ExxonMobil said today it started up an expansion of its Kearl oil sands project in Alberta ahead of schedule. The project is expected to double overall Kearl production to 220,000 barrels per day of bitumen. ExxonMobil said it would tap into approximately 4.6 billion barrels of bitumen over a period of more than 40 years.
The expansion consists of three new trains that use proprietary paraffinic froth treatment technology, which saves energy and does not require an on-site upgrader.
