ExxonMobil is seeking regulatory approval to restart its Torrance, California, refinery, which was damaged in a February explosion. Via FuelFix, the company asked state authorities for a Sept. 2 hearing on permission to restart an old electrostatic precipitator while the one damaged in the explosion is being repaired. An official at the South Coast Air Quality Management District said ExxonMobil would be allowed to operate the refinery at 65% capacity if it gets permission to install the old electrostatic precipitator.
The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health fined ExxonMobil more than $560,000 for workplace safety and health violations after investigating the Feb. 18 explosion. Four contractors were hospitalized with minor injuries as a result of the blast.
