The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) approved the construction of the Constitution natural gas pipeline, which will serve markets in the Northeast. The $683 million, 124-mile pipeline will deliver gas produced in the Marcellus shale of northern Pennsylvania to New York and New England. Via the Daily Star of Oneonta, N.Y., FERC disagreed with claims by a local opposition group that the pipeline is unnecessary. FERC also noted that Constitution Pipeline Co. has taken steps to minimize adverse economic impacts to landowners affected by the pipeline.
Customers in New York and New England were exposed to high natural gas prices last winter due to a lack of gas pipeline infrastructure to serve those markets. Construction of the pipeline will begin in the first quarter of next year pending the receipt of additional regulatory approvals. Constitution said the pipeline could begin service by the winter of 2015 or 2016.
