The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on Wednesday approved the Freeport LNG export project. The project includes the construction and operation of a liquefaction plant with three trains, each with an annual capacity of 4.4 million metric tons. Freeport LNG hopes to begin building its first trains in 2015.
Along with Cameron LNG and Sabine Pass LNG, Freeport LNG is the third proposed natural gas export project to obtain approval from both the Department of Energy and FERC.
ConocoPhillips owns 50% of the general partner of Freeport LNG. Global Infrastructure Partners agreed to buy a 25% stake in the project for $850 million earlier this month.
