A sulfur unit at ExxonMobil’s Beaumont, Texas, refinery shut down unexpectedly on Wednesday, the Beaumont Enterprise reports. The shutdown led to a brief shelter-in-place at a local courthouse after company officials detected concerning levels of sulfur dioxide coming from the unit. There was no determination as of yesterday what caused the shutdown. Emergency officials said they expected no health risks from the incident.
Last month operators at the refinery burned off product following a weather-related sitewide power outage. No injuries were reported, but a nearby university canceled some classes due to the release of smoke.
