LyondellBasell on Monday announced plans to build a world-scale propylene oxide and tertiary butyl alcohol plant on the Gulf Coast. The plant will allow LyondellBasell to capitalize on growing demand for polyurethanes, high-octane gasoline blending components and rubber and lubricant additives. Pat Quarles, senior vice president of intermediates and derivatives for LyondellBasell, said while the exact location of the plant had yet to be identified, the Gulf Coast is an “advantaged feedstock region” due to abundant natural gas liquids production.
LyondellBasell did not put a price tag on the proposed plant, but a company spokesman told FuelFix similar-sized projects cost more than $1 billion. Planned capacity is 900 million pounds of propylene oxide and 2 billion pounds of tertiary butyl alcohol per year. The company hopes to bring the plant into operation in 2019. LyondellBasell said the project would create up to 1,200 construction jobs at its peak.
