Shell today announced it had made a discovery in the eastern Gulf of Mexico Norphlet play it believes contains 100 million barrels of oil equivalent. The Rydberg well, where Shell made the discovery, is located 75 miles offshore in the eastern Gulf of Mexico in 7,500 feet of water. Combined with Shell’s previous Appomattox and Vicksburg discoveries, the new find brings the company’s potential resource base in the Norphlet to over 700 million barrels of oil equivalent.
Rydberg is the first discovery for the partnership of Shell, Ecopetrol America and Nexen. It is located within 10 miles of Shell’s planned Appomattox development and the Vicksburg discovery, which it co-owns with Nexen.
