The construction of the new World Trade Center is a project requiring collaboration amongst hundreds of large and small companies and the thousands of people who work on site nearly every day. Beyond the massive scale of the project is the emotional and historical significance, which is a constant source of motivation for everyone involved.
HYTORC, a New Jersey-based industrial bolting system manufacturer, was honored to be an integral part of this project. A combination of air- and hydraulic-powered bolting systems was used in the assembly of the crane systems and the communication rings and spire that make One World Trade Center the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere. Reid Hensen, HYTORC’s New York metropolitan area representative, was involved in project discussions before the first floor of the tower was standing. Two years and 106 stories later, all of the bolting work on the communication rings and tower had been meticulously planned and tested to ensure the job would be done seamlessly.
As the tower rose floor by floor and the jumping sections on the cranes were moved, the HYTORC bolting systems were an essential part of the process. An air-powered HYTORC Torque Gun, capable of more than 5,000 foot pounds, was used to tighten the bolts on the crane sections with safety, speed and accuracy that made it the obvious choice.
Equally important was the ongoing testing of the various bolting systems and fasteners that would be used at the top. Working together with an engineering team and the tool operators, a plan was developed for the assembly of the 408-foot steel spire and the communication rings that surround it. When the time for assembly came, the tool operators had the training and the plans necessary to ensure the erection of the spire would be a success.
“Throughout this project, the site manager and his crew knew I was just a phone call away,” Hensen said. “Countless hours were spent on site, planning and training with the crew. Seeing the final piece of the spire put in place was a very emotional experience.”
With offices and representatives around the world and nearly 50 years of experience in industrial bolting, HYTORC has become the most trusted name in the industry.
