Thirty-two people were killed and more than 100 were injured in an explosion Wednesday at a Pemex chemical plant on Mexico’s southern Gulf Coast. Via the Associated Press, the ensuing fire is under control but more than 2,000 people were evacuated from the area as a precaution. The explosion occurred at a plant that produces vinyl chloride. Mexichem operates the plant in partnership with Pemex.
It is the latest in a string of fatal accidents at Pemex facilities. In February a worker was killed in a fire at the same chemical plant and two workers were killed in a fire aboard a Gulf of Mexico oil platform.
