A fire that erupted on a Gulf of Mexico oil platform owned by Pemex killed two workers and injured eight more. Via the Associated Press, the fire on the Abkatun A platform off the coast of the Mexican state of Campeche was brought under control Sunday morning. One of the deceased workers was a Pemex employee and the other was a contractor. Six of the injured workers were hospitalized, and two were treated and released.
Pemex has suffered numerous safety incidents in both its upstream and downstream sectors in recent months. A fire aboard the Abkatun Permanente platform in the Bay of Campeche last April killed four people and injured more than 40. Five workers were injured in a fire at Pemex’s refinery in Veracruz in December and a contractor died in a fall at its Guanajuato refinery in November.
