A CSX Corp. train carrying hazardous materials derailed near Knoxville, Tenn., this morning, causing an acrylonitrile leak that prompted at least 5,000 people to evacuate. According to local media reports, 25 people have been hospitalized for possible exposure to the chemical, which can cause headaches, dizziness, nausea and kidney irritation when inhaled at high levels. No one is believed to have suffered life-threatening exposure.
Via Bloomberg, the accident disrupted main-line shipments between Nashville and Knoxville. CSX ships oil along the route. There was no crude oil on the train that derailed.
