As vice president of sales for ENVENT Corp., Jay Nyberg plans to expand ENVENT’s role as a leader in the field of degassing and wastewater treatment service. BIC Magazine recently visited with Nyberg to learn more about him, his role in the company and his plans for ENVENT’s future.
Q: What led to your position at ENVENT?
A: During the past 25 years, I have held various sales leadership positions primarily with three successful environmental and industrial companies. My main area of focus has always been sales and business development, and I have always been excited by opportunities for providing customers with a very high level of service. When I was approached by the owners of ENVENT — who shared their vision for providing mobile degassing and water treatment services globally — I was very intrigued. It was a new concept for me, but it has been a great fit.
Q: What is the most important part of your position?
A: The most important part of any sales leader’s job is to provide support and guidance to the staff. It has been my job to make sure they have the training and tools they need to become successful. In addition, it is my goal to make sure every sales person in the organization shares the same enthusiasm and vision the company sets. Here at ENVENT, we have the strongest operational and engineering departments in our industry — getting that knowledge and experience into the hands of our sales staff and customers is priority No. 1 for me.
My goal is to take our longstanding good reputation and share it with the multitude of customers who have had the chance to work with us. Revenue growth is always a priority; however, that growth cannot come at the expense of safety and great customer service. As an operational and sales team, it is our goal to provide superior service to our customers while expanding our customer base in the Gulf as well as the rest of the country.
Q: What’s the most important thing a person should know before taking a career path similar to yours?
A: Prepare to be challenged at least once a week; it’s the never-ending learning curve. A strong company is dynamic. The working environment at ENVENT is a great example of where people’s interaction leads to ideas and solutions for customer problems. This kind of atmosphere creates an energy that brings out the best in everyone.
Q: What is your best management tactic?
A: Helping my team see every challenge is an opportunity for growth is a valuable tactic. In my experience, the direct results of implementing this rule in the workplace are it eliminates panic, creates a cohesive team, and builds personal and professional experience in ways that lead to professional growth and customer satisfaction.
My favorite aspect of working at ENVENT is seeing an expert team execute a job and receive the appreciation of the customer. We continue to innovate and create cutting-edge technology. We are advancing the ball in many directions and customers will see many new things from ENVENT in 2015.
Q: How do you maintain a good work/home life balance?
A: The reason we all come to work every day is for our families, and it’s important none of us forget that. Being in a position that requires substantial travel, I make sure when I am home my family comes first. This means prioritizing the things that are important to us as a family. Currently, that means Cub Scouts. I’m about to become involved in scouting for the second time in my life (the first was 40 years ago), and I am really excited about it.
