Energy production in the United States will outstrip consumption in 2035 — a year in which the nation will become energy self-sufficient — according to research unveiled today by BP. In its annual Energy Outlook, BP projected that U.S. energy production will rise as a share of consumption from 84% in 2012 to 101% in 2035. By that time, the US will still be the world’s largest producer of natural gas and its share of global demand will decline from 18% to 13%. Natural gas and biofuels will have gained ground relative to oil with regard to US energy consumption, but oil will still make up 80% of demand.
