Duke Energy today announced plans to build a $1.5 billion, 1,640-megawatt natural gas-fired power plant in Citrus County, Fla. Duke has chosen its self-build option to construct the plant, which will be built on 400 acres adjacent to its Crystal River Energy Complex. The company hopes to break ground in early 2016 and bring the plant into operation by 2018. The facility will receive natural gas from a new Alabama-to-Florida pipeline being built by Sabal Trail Transmission.
Duke also announced plans to build two new simple-cycle combustion turbine generators at its Suwanee Plant near Live Oak, Fla., and retire two coal-fired units at the Crystal River facility.
