The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has ruled in favor of a $480 million project to add two reactor units to the South Texas Project, the Houston Business Journal reports. The ruling comes despite the NRC’s previous concerns about Japan-based Toshiba’s partial ownership in the project. U.S. law bars foreign entities from owning domestic nuclear facilities. Toshiba, however, owns a mere 10% of the project — NRG Energy owns the rest.
The South Texas Project, which is co-owned by NRG, CPS Energy and Austin Energy, currently generates 2,700 megawatts of power between two units.
