BP announced Wednesday it had successfully completed the commissioning of a new 102,000-barrel-per-day coker unit at its Whiting, Ind., refinery, marking the last major milestone of a multimillion-dollar modernization project. The refinery now has increased ability to process heavy sour crude from Canada, and it will begin a three-month ramp-up process at the end of this year. BP downstream head Iain Conn said in a statement the refinery is expect to deliver $1 billion of operational cash flow per year. The Whiting modernization comes on the heels of other North American refining projects, including a clean diesel upgrade in Cherry Point, Wash., and the addition of a continuous catalytic reformer in Toledo, Ohio. The Whiting facility is BP’s largest refinery in the United States.
