MDU Resources will put plans for a second greenfield refinery in North Dakota on hold while its recently opened Dakota Prairie Refinery operates at a loss. Via the Grand Forks, North Dakota, Herald, the new refinery’s performance has been dragged down by low oil prices. An MDU Resources spokesman said the company took the oil price collapse into consideration prior to starting up the refinery in May and acknowledged its vulnerability to market fluctuations.
MDU Resources — which co-owns the Dakota Prairie Refinery with Calumet Specialty Products Partners and WBI Energy — said last November it planned to build another refinery in Minot. The Dakota Prairie Refinery has operated at a loss of $12.6 million thus far.
