Sasol raised the estimated cost to build its proposed Lake Charles, Louisiana, ethane cracker from $8.9 billion to $11 billion after a review. Via Bloomberg, the company’s revision cites “poorer-than-anticipated subsurface conditions,” which will drive up construction and labor costs and cause delays. Sasol CEO David Constable said the $11 billion estimate represents the “worst-case scenario.”
The company made a final investment decision on the 1.5-million-ton-per-year ethane cracker in October 2014. The plant is 50-percent complete.
