Sempra Energy today announced its Cameron LNG project had received final approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Sempra President Octavio M.C. Simoes said in a news release the company would begin construction on the 1.7 billion-cubic-feet-per-day natural gas export facility, to be located in Hackberry, La., later this year. FERC also granted Sempra authorization to build a 21-mile, 42-inch expansion of the Cameron Interstate Pipeline, a new compressor station and ancillary equipment. The Department of Energy (DOE) in February authorized Sempra to export LNG to non-free-trade-agreement nations.
Cheniere Energy’s Sabine Pass facility in Cameron Parish, La., is the only other LNG export terminal to receive approval from both FERC and the DOE. Cameron LNG is expected to begin exporting natural gas in 2017.
