BP on Friday announced it had begun operations at its Sunrise Phase 1 in-situ oil sands project in Alberta, Canada. It marks BP’s first in-situ oil sands operations and is the company’s sixth major project startup this year.
The Sunrise project will consist of three phases of development that will ultimately grow capacity to 200,000 barrels per day. The first phase will have a capacity of 60,000 barrels per day between two processing plants. The second plant of the first phase will start up in the middle of next year. The second and third phases are in the design and appraisal stages, respectively.
Sunrise is a 50/50 joint venture between BP and operator Husky Energy.
