For the past 30 years, Intergulf Corp. has been a known leader in liquids management for plants and refineries on the greater Gulf Coast and throughout the nation. It is because of this reputation Intergulf was able to attain a new permit expansion during a volatile time in the industry.

The company’s expanded capabilities now include the acceptance and treatment of hazardous waste thanks to a permit it received from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).
“When we submitted our application to the TCEQ, there were some very public events taking place within our industry, which casted a big shadow on our hopes for making this successful,” said Velek. “We had no problem assuring the state we did not intend to follow in these competitors’ footsteps.”
Intergulf’s TCEQ permit expands upon its solid waste permit and allows the company to treat hazardous waste. The wastewater treatment exemption allows third-party hazardous waste treatment facilities to accept hazardous waste that can ultimately be treated by the receiving facility or by the publicly owned treatment works as long as the two are connected via pipeline, and as long as the effluent meets EPA’s centralized waste treatment standards and local parameters. All effluent waters from this process will be sent to Gulf Coast Waste Disposal Authority’s (GCWDA) Bayport facility in Pasadena, Texas, via pipeline.

Intergulf’s treatment operations have been modified to accommodate the new waste acceptance capabilities. The company can now provide wastewater treatment options to generators of hazardous wastewaters that carry the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act hazardous waste codes D001, D002, D003, D018, D019, D021, D022, D023, D024, D025, D026, D027, D028, D029, D035, D036, D037, D038, D039, D040, D041, D042 and D043. Intergulf has been operating this plant for almost 15 years and has built a solid customer base, which includes some of the largest petrochemical and refining companies in the world.

“We also switched to using Intergulf’s treatment and recycling services three years ago and the company always tries to bring sound and creative solutions to the challenges we face,” said Robin Barnard, environmental coordinator at Oiltanking.
