DENVER — Global building products manufacturer Johns Manville (JM) was recently honored with the 24-Karat Gold Challenge Award by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s Environmental Leadership Program. The program recognizes organizations for “above and beyond” efforts in creating and implementing measurable contributions to the environment, the economy and society.
JM won the award thanks to recent activities at the JM/Industrial Insulation Group manufacturing facility in Fruita, Colorado. Staff redesigned and reconstructed its manufacturing process, eliminating 863 tons annually of landfill waste material by diverting the material into a new energy-conserving product stream. As a result, the facility ended its 40 years of reliance on a 3-acre waste impoundment complex, and the product made from this reclaimed material is estimated to reduce end user carbon dioxide emissions by over 270,000 tons/year.
