Chemical manufacturer Borealis and project developer Agrifos Partners have reached an agreement to build a world-scale ammonia plant along the Texas Gulf Coast. Gulf Coast Ammonia will be built within an existing chemical site, Borealis said. The two firms are in final negotiations with a short list of site owners, and a final site selection is expected within a few months. The plant is expected to start up in 2019.
The plant will use hydrogen and nitrogen feedstock, with pricing linked to U.S. natural gas indexes. Borealis Executive Vice President Markku Korvenranta said the project is a “key step” in his company’s goal to sell 10 million tons of nitrogen-based fertilizer products per year by 2020.
