Calumet Specialty Products Partners and MDU Resources today announced their new 20,000-barrel-per-day Dakota Prairie Refinery in North Dakota has begun operations. It is the first greenfield fuels refinery built in the U.S. in nearly 40 years. The refinery will produce up to 7,000 barrels per day of diesel fuel and up to 6,500 barrels per day of naphtha. The plant’s output will also include up to 6,000 barrels per day of atmospheric tower bottoms and other products.
The refinery will process Bakken crude oil and sell its diesel to North Dakota-based customers. MDU Resources CEO David Goodlin said the new refinery is “well positioned” to meet regional demand given that the state imports more than two-thirds of its diesel.
