Sasol received the final two permits required to build a $21 billion gas-to-liquids and ethane cracker facility in Lake Charles, La., Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) announced today. The South African firm first announced its plans to build the facility at its existing Lake Charles site in 2012.
“Sasol’s $21 billion investment in Southwest Louisiana shows great confidence in the future of our state, and I look forward to working with them on this and other projects as we continue to harness the game-changing potential of America’s abundant natural gas,” Landrieu said in a statement.
The facility is expected to create 1,200 direct jobs and 5,800 indirect jobs. Earlier this week the Associated General Contractors of America reported Lake Charles had the highest construction jobs growth rate among all U.S. metropolitan areas between July 2013 and July 2014.
