Farmer-owned energy, food and grain producer CHS Inc. today announced a $406 million plan to upgrade its refinery in Laurel, Mont. The project will include a new hydrogen plant and crude unit modifications to increase crude throughput. CHS will also perform hydrocracker modifications to boost diesel output, reduce production snags and allow the refinery to process a wider variety of crudes. Work is set to begin this fall and the project will be completed in phases through 2019.
CHS announced plans last year to boost capacity at its 85,000-barrels-per-day McPherson, Kan., refinery by 18%. The company said that work would take place concurrently with a $555 million replacement coker project at the refinery that was already in progress.
CHS markets and distributes the Cenex line of refined fuels, lubricants, propane and renewable energy products.
